Ian Ryan was born in 1973 and is based in Chelmsford, Essex. He began his formal art education at the age 38 following a lifelong passion for art making and looking. After successfully completing his BA (hons) Fine Art he spent one-year studying outside traditional academia on the TOMA alternative art programme. Currently on his final year of MA studies at City & Guilds London Art School, Ian aims to complete his studies October 2021.

Primarily a painter working in oils Ian is interested in painting people yet sees the portrait genre as much an exploration of the self as it is the other. Since 2019 he has been experimenting with materials such as the Perspex supports of the ‘Screen Stars’ series. The strong colour and shiny reflective surface demanded painstaking application of viscous oil paint with tiny modified brushes. This allowed colours to be pushed and pulled into position and ensure strokes remain as a visual reminder of the process of their creation.

Ian has exhibited work in various galleries and public spaces in Essex and London, including several occasions at The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition and his work is found in private collections.
